Congratulations on your new baby!
Thank you so much for allowing me the amazing and rewarding job of photographing your new little mini me in his/hers first few weeks of life! I love kids – and “freshies”, as I call them, are my favorite to photograph! I’m truly blessed you’ve given me this opportunity.
What to Expect
Before the shoot – please feed your freshie 2-3 hours prior, and plan on feeding him/her as soon as I arrive. Also – please do not let them sleep beforehand, instead, try giving them a bath. Other options are tummy time, tickling their feet, kick with only diaper on, etc. This will ensure those squishy newborn photos that everyone loves as they sleep through our session. I can’t stress the importance of keeping them awake prior to the photo session. Many parents think that their child will sleep during this session even if sleeping beforehand.
Your child will be undressed and/or wrapped during most of the session and I will bring a portable heater with me to the photo shoot. It will be a beachy 80 degrees in the room and I will be dressed for a tan! (I promise to wear a shirt!) It will be warm in the room and I suggest that you wear appropriate clothing as well.
Sessions last anywhere in between 2-3 hours, depending on how efficient we are. If your baby is a light sleeper or hungry, it may take longer! The easiest way to ensure a sleepy baby is the willingness to nurse / breastfeed / bottle feed off and on. If you can bring the soothe pacificer (the blue / green one from the hospital) it won’t leave marks on the face of your little one. Even if you haven’t used one before – having it there during the photo session really helps calm them down.
For Moms & Dads:
Mom & Dad – you are a very big part of the show! Photographing the connection between you and your baby is one of the best parts of my job. Just as they encourage in the hospital, skin to skin contact creates the most beautiful images.
Dads – If you prefer not to be shirtless, I ask you bring a tighter fitting t-shirt in white or black with a good pair of jeans.
Moms – Please wear something comfortable! You’ve just been through childbirth and your comfort is most important. Please keep your colors neutral and subtle colors of nail polish and (French tips preferred or nude colors) as your hands will most likely be in the photos. Rest assured – I will work with you to find the most flattering angles and you have the ability to say no or suggest new positions.
Sisters – White tops and Jeans! I ask that girls have natural hair and / or braids. They will want to be close to their new brother or sister and having their hair out of the way keeps more shots useable.
Brothers – White tops and jeans as well. Shirtless photos are always fun, too.
I ask that you explain to your children what is going to happen during this photo session. I know kids will be kids and I fully anticipate controlled chaos. However, there are a lot of lights, stands, and reflectors and while around the baby, keeping a quiet, calm, and relaxed is essential.
A few additional thoughts
If siblings are joining the session – I suggest bringing an iPad or having a DVD player handy with a favorite show on until we are ready for them. Snacks are also a plus and sometimes provide encouragement during the photo session.
It’s my hope that you feel comfortable and relaxed. I may not talk with you druing the session and I’m not doing it to ignore you – I’m simply focused on your “freshie” and getting the best possible photos. You are more than welcome to ask me questions and if you’d like – you can follow along with me and see every shot that I’m taking. All you have to do is ask.
